Chun-Li, the video game character
Chun-Li's grand video game debut was in 1991, when the revolutionary video game, Street Fighter 2, hit the arcades and changed the world of video games forever. Street Fighter 2 was obviously not the very first fighting game (SF1 would logically have to come first, and let us not forget good ol' Karate Champ), but to the best of my knowledge it was the first game that allowed you to play as different characters.
Amongst the eight original world warriors and the four Grand Masters, Chun-Li was the only female challenger (although for a long time I had trouble convincing other people that Vega was a man. ^_^), and thus, she became (as I have said many times and will continue to call her) The First Lady of Fighting Games. Rivals to Chun-Li's crown have come and gone (Sonya Blade, Mai Shiranui, etc.), but Chun-Li remains the top game girl by far. Chun-Li is the game girl by which all other game girls are compared to.
Since Street Fighter II hit the arcades in 1991, there have been over 20 sequels and spinoffs to the series, and Chun-Li has been present and available for use in all but two of them, Street Fighter III, and SF III Double Impact (and she even had a cameo in Double Impact), making her the most constant character in the series aside from Ryu and Ken.
