Kikouken.com Fan Art Contest, 2001
Results:
My system of evaluating the submissions was based on the simple, yet efficient method used by the Zany Video Game Quotes site to judge their contest. Here's how it worked: a panel of judges (myself and a handful of fan artists I know and respect) looked at the submissions and voted on our top three pics. The first pic would get three points, the second would get two, and third would get one. No muss, no fuss. Now, without further ado, here are the winners:
First Place (Capcom Vs SNK 2)
Brock "Brocklee" Hor, Jr
Brocklee excels at putting amazing amounts of action and detail into his art, and this piece is no exception. The amount of skill and detail involved in making a picture like this far exceeds what you see in most comic books. He blew us away with all the extras he packed into this work, like the lightning, the ominous sillouette of Bison looming overhead, Chun-Li's muscles, the chi power at her fingertips... the laundry list goes on and on. Enjoy Capcom Vs SNK 2, Brock. You've earned it.
Second Place (Street Fighter Alpha DVD)
Peter Nguyen
What made this picture a favorite was not only the incredible detail, but the fact that, like all good emotional art, you know exactly what the subject is feeling. If we were just to see Chun-Li sitting down, it could mean any number of things, but with her body language and all the blues surrounding her, you know she's more than just physically exhausted. One judge made a very interesting observation: "...It could describe her after the SF2 tournament, she defeats Bison, avenges her father, and wonders what she'll do from there..." I've seen emotional pictures of Chun-Li before, but this one is by far the best. I am not only impressed, but genuinly touched by it.
Third Place (Chun-Li Jr Figure)
Valerie Fisse
Hands down, THE most creative entry! When I asked people to get creative, entries like this were exactly what I was hoping for. Though Val's style is somewhat simpler than Nguyen's or Brock's, her good CG skills and fantastic imagination (which I've maintained from the start would yield big bonus points) won her a special place in the hearts of the judges. Even though it didn't win, this art will be my prime example of what I like to see in creative entries in future contests. I just love it.
Honorable Mention
Tim Martin
I didn't honestly expect much (or any) Millenia submissions, but I put the option out there just in case someone felt like trying something other than Chun-Li for the contest, because fan art of Millenia before Tim Martin was non-existent, and that's a damn crime, because she's a great character. In fact, I actually helped him make it by giving him additional background info and screenshots of Millenia, and the end result was not just the first Millenia fan art, but it was GREAT Millenia fan art. To begin with, Millenia's outfit is a thousand times more complex than Chun-Li's, but Tim nailed it. The actual art was worthy of Stan Lee himself, and he topped it off with top-notch CG. I say at no risk of overstating myself that it broke my heart that this entry didn't place.
